Building on a 30-Year Relationship

Ray Dalio, the billionaire investor and founder of the world’s largest hedge fund, Bridgewater Associates, has announced plans to establish a new branch of his family office in Abu Dhabi. The move comes as part of Mr Dalio’s Middle East expansion and builds on his longstanding relationship with the UAE. In fact, he has worked closely with the country for over 30 years and has come to greatly admire its people and leadership.

The Role of the Dalio Family Office

The new branch of the family office, known as the Dalio Family Office (DFO), will be located in the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM). The DFO provides comprehensive support to the Dalio family in their investments and philanthropic efforts through Dalio Philanthropies. But it will also engage in strategic partnerships, particularly in areas of common interest such as ocean exploration. In this way, the DFO aims to make a meaningful contribution to the long-term growth of the wider Middle East region.

Why Abu Dhabi?

Mr Dalio has expressed his excitement at the prospect of making Abu Dhabi the home for the Dalio Family Office. He cites the UAE’s position as a hub for many exciting developments in the region, including in Saudi Arabia, as a key factor. In particular, he sees the potential for the ADGM to become one of the fastest-growing financial centers in the MENA region. Last year alone, the ADGM saw a 56% increase in assets under management, a 30% increase in total active licenses, and a 29% increase in its workforce. The number of operational entities within the ADGM also rose by 30% to 1,378.

Concluding Thoughts

For Mr Dalio, establishing the Dalio Family Office in Abu Dhabi is more than just a business move. It reflects his deep respect for the people and leadership of the UAE and his commitment to making a positive impact in the region. As he continues to expand his reach, he is likely to find many exciting opportunities for collaboration and growth in this dynamic and forward-thinking part of the world.
