In the bustling seaside town of Brighton, nestled outside of the train station, lies the long-adored Barry’s Boulangerie. After weathering a tempestuous storm that ravaged the bakery’s roof, this charming pastry hub shuttered its doors last year. But now, it has risen from the ashes, reopening under new ownership with a new moniker, all in honor of its former boss, Barry Jackson-Whitehead.
Barry’s Boulangerie: A Serendipitous Beginning
Before the dreamy wafts of freshly baked bread filled the air, Barry Jackson-Whitehead had to persuade the station authorities to grant him permission to set up a stall outside Brighton Station. Despite their initial reservations, they eventually acquiesced, and thus began the birth of an instant success. Commuters clamored for the artisanal pastries and other businesses followed suit, with La Boulangerie being the first outside of the station to join in the fun around 2011. Al Focquaert, the current owner of Barry’s Boulangerie, worked under Barry for a year and a half until he met an untimely demise. The business subsequently changed hands, first to the Real Patisserie, then to Al, who rechristened it in honor of the man who started it all.
Surviving Strikes and Pandemic: A Trying Time for the Bakery
Despite the success and popularity of Barry’s Boulangerie, the business faced a slew of challenges, including strikes that disrupted train services, and then the pandemic that brought the entire world to a standstill. However, Al had a stroke of luck when the opportunity to purchase the business presented itself before the pandemic struck. Undeterred by the challenges posed by the pandemic, Al invested in a new unit, breathed new life into the business, and now proudly offers freshly baked goods every day, sourced from the esteemed Real Patisserie in Southwick.
The Future of Barry’s Boulangerie
As a tribute to the loyal customers who stood by the bakery through thick and thin, Barry’s Boulangerie is currently offering a promotional discount of 50% throughout the month of April. But the surprises don’t end there; after the current promotion ends, the bakery plans to offer reduced prices for products from the previous day. Barry’s Boulangerie has come full circle, rising up from the ashes and spreading its wings once more, much like the delicious aroma of fresh bread wafting through the air.
